Welcome to Farmhouse on the Pond

Hello, everyone. Welcome to Farmhouse on the Pond! We’re so glad you’re here. Nestled at the top of a windswept hill in Upstate New York, beneath a canopy of ancient oak trees, our 19th century farmhouse sits on 4+ acres of land that was once part of a large, working farm.

When I purchased the house in 2010, it had been in the possession of the previous owners for 40 years, and bore the scars of those decades: an open concept floor plan, dated wallpaper, orange-stained oak cabinets, wall to wall carpet, peach-colored everything, and a truly “unique” first floor bathroom. I have spent the past decade renovating it from top to bottom, bringing it both forward into the present and back to its roots.

We’ve exposed original plank floors, put walls back up where they belong, and gutted both bathrooms down to the studs. Given that the house includes a large addition that was not built with period integrity, it would have been next to impossible to do a faithful restoration of the farmhouse to its original glory, so we haven’t tried. Instead we’ve done our best to straddle the line between modern function and classic character. The decor is eclectic, including elements of Modern Farmhouse, English Cottage, and French Provincial. The furnishings are a mix of antique finds, family heirlooms, and a hodge podge of miscellaneous items we picked up cheap from who knows where in early adulthood. The latter, along with the reality of living with two dogs during mud season, keeps it all from becoming too precious, but to us, it’s perfect.

Come on in and take a peek.

The cheery, red front door is accessed via a wraparound porch. (Note: the top picture was taken before the door was replaced.) Inside, you enter a foyer with original wood floors. To the left, not pictured, is a large room currently serving as my husband’s office, but which is a legal bedroom with a spacious walk-in closet. To the right is the first-floor laundry room.

Straight ahead up the stairs there are three more bedrooms and an en suite master bath (pictured below). Walk through to the addition at the back of the main floor and you will discover another full bathroom with a cast iron claw foot tub, a family room, kitchen, dining room, library/my office, and a screened porch.
